Rising Star in Advanced Dentistry Dr. Sabrina Magid, DMD, Chosen as One of Westchester Magazine’s Top 22 People to Watch in Westchester County in 2012

Dr. Sabrina Magid of Advanced Dentistry of Westchester

Harrison, NY (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Dr. Sabrina Magid has been named by Westchester Magazine as one of the top 22 people to watch in the County in 2012. To the generations of patients who have long relied on the stellar care and expertise at Advanced Dentistry of Westchester (ADofW) Dr. Sabrina Magid’s recent award as one of Westchester Magazine’s top movers and shakers to watch in the county should come as no surprise.

“I am very honored to be singled out by Westchester Magazine to receive this award! I believe I received this award for all the dentists that are improving the lives of patients every day. As a practice, Advanced Dentistry of Westchester has incorporated the latest advances in patient care to provide healthy, beautiful smiles, while contributing to our patients’ overall health. Our efforts in the screening and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and other health problems have greatly enhanced the quality of life for many people,” said Dr. Sabrina Magid.

At only 29, Dr. Magid’s expertise in the dental field is extensive. While at The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Magid treated patients in the remote and underserved villages of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Throughout her schooling and dental career, she has been committed to addressing the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing patients. During high school, she took American Sign Language courses at the New York School for the Deaf, and at Duke University, she initiated and taught an introductory class on ASL and Deaf culture. She has acted as a mentor to other dentists, young and old, in sharing the need for sensitivity in their approach to treating deaf patients.

Dr. Magid is quite accomplished as a young woman in the field. She is the recipient of the prestigious “Robert Seminara Resident of the Year” award for “excellence in General Dentistry and outstanding service as a PGY1 Dental Resident” from NY Presbyterian-Methodist Hospital. She is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, the American Dental Association, and a founding member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. Dr. Magid has lectured to dental societies around the state on the dentist’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). “Dentists are in a unique position to screen for and treat this widespread problem,” said Magid.

Dr. Magid is focused on the future of dentistry and the “whole body” dentist approach. “We were one of the first practices in the country to use digital X-ray, which is more diagnostic than film with far less radiation. Today, along with digital X-ray, we use a tiny laser and camera to diagnose dental decay long before it is seen by other means–allowing us to treat conservatively.” ADofW was also the first practice to use the VELscope device to prevent oral cancer which was featured on Dr. Oz and NBC’s “The Doctors.” Along with offering laser treatment and “air abrasion” as minimally invasive technique for fillings, Dr. Magid, and her partner in the practice Dr. Kenneth Magid, employ a CAD CAM laser/software system for more complex work involving crowns and bonding. ADW plans to expand the use of this state-of-the-art technology for immediately replacing teeth considered unrestorable. For more information on Dr. Sabrina Magid, please visit http://www.adofw.com/

Hearing Aids Improve Quality of Life, Empower People with Hearing Loss to Stay Socially Active, New Study by Better Hearing Institute Finds

Hearing Aids Improve Quality of Life, Empower People with Hearing Loss to Stay Socially Active, New Study by Better Hearing Institute Finds

Hearing Aid

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 02, 2011

According to a comprehensive research study conducted by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), today’s technically advanced, sleekly designed hearing aids are helping people with hearing loss regain their quality of life and remain socially involved. In fact, eight out of ten hearing aid users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives specifically due to their hearing aids. And 82 percent of hearing aid users would recommend hearing aids to their friends.

The findings of this nationally representative survey are both timely and encouraging—particularly given that an increasing number of Americans are suffering from noise-induced hearing loss at increasingly younger ages, oftentimes many years before retirement and even as early as their teens.

“This survey clearly reveals how dramatically people’s lives can improve with the use of hearing aids,” says Sergei Kochkin, PhD, BHI’s Executive Director. “In this comprehensive study of more than 2,000 hearing aid users, we looked at 14 specific quality-of-life issues and found that today’s hearing aids are a tremendous asset to people with even mild hearing loss who want to remain active and socially engaged throughout their lives.”

The improvements that people saw in their quality of life as a result of their use of hearings aids were broad and varied. Nearly 70 percent of hearing aid users said their ability to communicate effectively in most situations improved because of their hearing aid. A little more than half said their hearing aids improved their relationships at home, their social life, and their ability to join in groups. And roughly forty percent noted improvements in their sense of safety, self-confidence, feelings about self, sense of independence, and work relationships. Between 25 and 33 percent of hearing aid users said they even saw improvements in their romance, sense of humor, cognitive skills, and mental, emotional, and physical health.

According to Kochkin, outdated notions about hearing aids pose a significant barrier that inhibits people from addressing their hearing loss. All told, public perception of hearing aids hasn’t kept pace with the new technologies and discreet designs of today’s modern devices. And unfortunately, these misperceptions are holding people back from improving their quality of life by addressing their hearing loss.

The BHI study bears out that 79 percent of people who do seek help and use hearing aids are satisfied with them, and 86 percent are satisfied with the benefit they derive from hearing aid usage.

What’s more, as hearing aid technologies advance, individuals are becoming even more satisfied. Consumers, for example, are more satisfied with mini-BTEs than ever before and report superior sound quality, cosmetics, and functionality in more listening situations. In fact, in recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids because they have become miniaturized and nearly invisible due to the fact that an ear-mold is no longer necessary.

Ninety-one percent of all hearing aid users surveyed are satisfied with the ability of their hearing aids to improve communication in one-on-one situations. And more than three in four are satisfied in small groups (85%), while watching television (80%), outdoors (78%), during leisure activities (78%), while shopping (77%), and while riding in a car (77%).

“Today’s hearing aids are about staying young, not growing old,” Kochkin explains. “People want to hold onto their vitality as they enter and move through middle-age. But when someone ignores a hearing loss—which oftentimes has progressed gradually over time as a result of repeated noise exposure—that individual unwittingly begins losing the very vitality they treasure. What this research shows, however, is that those who do face their hearing loss and use hearing aids are experiencing significant and satisfying improvements in their quality of life.”

Another important take-away from the study is that benefit received from the hearing aid, and quality of life improvements, were highly related to the quality of care provided by the hearing healthcare professional. Ideally, hearing health professionals will include testing in a sound booth; use probe microphones to verify the hearing aid fit; use an array of counseling tools to help people hear better and adapt to their hearing aids; and validate improvement in hearing associated with hearing aid use.

To help consumers in purchasing hearing aids, and to guide them in what to look for in quality hearing healthcare, BHI has published a comprehensive publication entitled, “Your Guide to Buying Hearing Aids,” which is available at http://www.betterhearing.org, within the “Hearing Loss Treatments” section under hearing aids.

The four-part BHI survey used the National Family Opinion Panel to assess consumer perceptions of the functionality of modern hearing aids; compared the new invisible mini-BTE hearing aids to traditional style hearing aids; asked respondents to share how their lives changed as a result of their hearing aids; and evaluated the role the hearing healthcare professional had on consumer success with hearing aids.

“If you want to keep your mind sharp and life complete, don’t leave hearing loss unaddressed,” Kochkin advises. “Protect your vitality and quality of life before they silently slip away and you find yourself isolated from the human experience. The first step to preserving your future enjoyment in life is to make an appointment with a hearing health professional and get your hearing checked. Our research shows that millions are glad they did.”

People Suffering from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Could Possibly Recover a Significant Settlement From Manufacturers of Benzene Products.

People Suffering from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Could Possibly Recover a Significant Settlement From Manufacturers of Benzene Products.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 26, 2006

Thousands of people suffering from acute myelogenous leukemia may be entitled to significant monetary compensation for damages from manufacturers of benzene containing products. Acute myelogenous leukemia, or AML, is a potentially deadly cancer that has been linked to benzene exposure. Benzene is a well known carcinogen and is found in many products.

High levels of benzene exposure are often found in chemical plant workers, industrial plant workers using solvents, painters, paper and pulp workers, pipe fitters, refinery workers, synthetic rubber production workers, and tire plant workers, just to name a few. Workers employed in these industries seem to be at the highest risk of developing leukemia from benzene exposure. Other industries where workers are at high risk from benzene exposure include adhesive production, pesticide manufacturing, new paper press workers, printers, and gasoline station workers.

Two lawsuits were recently filed in King County Superior Court against manufacturers of benzene containing products on behalf of two Boeing workers who contracted acute myelogenous leukemia as a result benzene exposure on the job. The lawsuits were filed jointly by the Texas law firm Schmidt and Clark and the Seattle, Washington personal injury law firm Paglialunga & Harris, PS. The lawsuits are filed under cause numbers 05-2-37353-9 KNT and 06-2-10994-5 KNT.

The benzene lawsuits allege that the manufacturers of the benzene containing products failed to warn consumers about the serious health risks associated with using their products. Benzene leukemia lawsuits frequently seek unspecified damages, but could seek damages in the millions of dollars for pain and suffering and punitive damages.

According to Seattle lawyer Charles Paglialunga, who is investigating benzene leukemia lawsuits nationwide, “These lawsuits seek justice on behalf of people who were trying to do their jobs and were unknowingly exposed to benzene, a known cancer causing substance. The manufacturers of benzene containing products need to be held accountable for their actions. People who developed acute myelogenous leukemia from benzene exposure deserve compensation.”

Research May Predict Development of Kidney Failure in People with Type II Diabetes

Research May Predict Development of Kidney Failure in People with Type II Diabetes

Rockville, MD (Vocus) May 4, 2007

An alumnus of the American Kidney Fund’s Clinical Scientist in Nephrology program is conducting research that may one day help doctors predict which patients with type 2 diabetes will develop kidney failure.

Dr. Ravi Thadhani, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, worked with his colleagues to identify a set of urine proteins that are present almost 10 years before the onset of diabetes-induced kidney failure. The researchers compared urinary protein profiles among 62 Pima Indians with type 2 diabetes and normal kidney function. They followed these individuals for 10 years to monitor whether they developed diabetic kidney disease.

Their preliminary research found a protein “signature” that predicts the development of kidney failure. If these findings hold up under further testing, they may make it possible for doctors to predict which patients will experience diabetic kidney failure. Armed with that information, doctors could intervene with those patients to prevent kidney failure from occurring.

The research was published in Diabetes Care.

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in adults in the United States. Because kidney disease has no symptoms in its early stages, the American Kidney Fund recommends that anyone with diabetes talk to a doctor about having the simple tests that can check how well the kidneys are working.

Dr. Thadhani was an American Kidney Fund-Amgen Clinical Scientist in Nephrology from 1995 to 1998. Supported by this fellowship, he conducted research on pregnancy-related kidney disease and earned a master’s degree in public health.

“The AKF Clinical Scientist in Nephrology award came at a pivotal point in my early training when a research career in nephrology was quite uncertain,” said Dr. Thadhani. “AKF provided me an opportunity, and for this I am most grateful.”

The goal of AKF’s Clinical Scientist in Nephrology program is to improve the quality of care provided to kidney patients. This goal is achieved by enhancing the training of nephrologists who desire to pursue an academic career and whose primary professional commitment is to scholarship in the provision of patient care. Awardees receive advanced clinical training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics and epidemiology, and they conduct prevention and outcomes research. For more information about past and current CSN recipients, visit http://www.kidneyfund.org/fpr_csn.asp.

The American Kidney Fund is the nation’s #1 source of financial assistance to kidney patients, and is a leader in providing education and intervention to those who are at risk for kidney disease. For more information, visit http://www.kidneyfund.org.
