Patrick Heelen: Inspiring Good in Others

Patrick Heelen: Inspiring Good in Others

Alta Vista, KS (PRWEB) February 05, 2012

When a group of vacationing college students pulled Patrick Heelen from the wreckage of a one-car crash on the night of Dec. 29, 2011, they may have saved more than one life.

Moved by the kindness of the strangers who rescued him, Patrick Heelen plans to lead a self-styled “Good Samaritan Movement” on Feb. 11 on the grounds of Ag Heritage Park in Alta Vista, Kansas, where he hopes to encourage “at least 1,000 people to commit a random act of kindness,” according to a press statement issued today.

Patrick Heelen, an Alta Vista resident, was vacationing with his family at the Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont – but alone in his car when it skidded off a back road near the resort. The accident occurred around 1 a.m. and “there wasn’t another car in sight,” he noted.

“My leg was broken, I had no cell phone and let me tell you, that road was pretty dark,” Patrick Heelen said. “If those kids hadn’t come along and helped me out, I might still be stuck there.”

Patrick Heelen’s rental car had hit an icy patch and slammed into a tree, breaking his left leg in two places and “basically pinning me between the door, the airbag and the bent dashboard,” he said. He’s not sure if he blacked out, Heelen added, but he’s certain he sat immobilized in the freezing car “for at least 90 minutes” before headlights appeared on the road behind him.

“They could have kept going, but they stopped,” Patrick Heelen said. “They got me out of the car and called 911, but then they decided to just drive me to the hospital themselves.”

“He was clearly in pain, and I think he was a little disoriented,” noted Michael Fridman, one of the four Boston University underclassmen who happened upon Heelen and sprang to his rescue. “I didn’t think we should wait for an ambulance, so we called 911 back told them we were taking him right to the hospital.”

Patrick Heelen spent the better part of the last month recuperating at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Vermont, where three screws were placed in his broken leg. Upon returning home to Alta Vista on Jan. 23, the manager of a small chain of organic grocery stores decided to return the kindness shown him by Fridman and his classmates by organizing his “Good Samaritan Movement.”

“I hope 10,000 people come,” Patrick Heelen said. “I hope a million come. But if I can tell 1,000 people about what those kids did for me and get them to do 1,000 nice things for other people, then I’ll be extremely gratified.”

Heelen’s event should not be confused with the “Good Samaritan Movement” that gathered Jan. 29 in New York City’s Union Square Park, a function of the World Mission Society Church of God. That event, which launched World Mission Society’s Food of Life food-donation campaign, shares a sentiment with Patrick Heelen’s event, but little else.

Neighbors of Patrick Heelen and his wife of 14 years, Catherine, are not surprised the family would be involved in a kindness-spreading movement.

“They’re wonderful people,” said Stacey Blackley, who lived across the road from the Heelens for 10 years. “I’m very close with Catherine, and Patrick is always out mowing his lawn or kicking the ball around with his kids and my kids. At barbecues and school plays, they’re just the nicest family, and it makes perfect sense that Patrick Heelen would try to inspire others to be nice and help others.”

The Alta Vista “Good Samaritan Movement” is scheduled to begin at noon Feb. 11, according to the press statement, and all are invited to attend.

“Those boys might have saved my life,” Patrick Heelen said. “I am forever in their debt, and it seems to me the best way to repay them is to spread their kindness to someone else. These are the traits that make a person a human being.”

About Patrick Heelen

Patrick Heelen, 44, is the owner and manager of a chain of organic markets in the Topeka, Kansas region. He lives in Alta Vista, Kansas, with his wife of 14 years, Catherine, and their two children. A major college basketball fan and regular churchgoer, Patrick Heelen enjoys skiing and stamp collecting, and is an avid fan of baroque music.

RED Finances $ 72 Million FHA Insured Sub Rehab Loan For Aimco Apartment Community In San Francisco Area

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Red Mortgage Capital, LLC, the mortgage banking arm of comprehensive capital provider RED CAPITAL GROUP, LLC announced it processed and funded a $ 72,240,400 FHA Section 221(d)(4) insured mortgage loan that will provide for the rehabilitation and permanent financing on a 308-unit multifamily property located in San Bruno, California, approximately ten miles south of San Francisco.

Pacific Bay Vistas, as the property will be named, originally was constructed circa 1984 and then acquired by Aimco as part of a previous large portfolio acquisition. Proceeds of the FHA financing will be used to undertake a substantial rehabilitation of the property, which is located on the highest residential hill in San Bruno in a predominantly residential section and has both San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean views. The rehab work will include new wall and ceiling insulation, replacing all exterior siding, new kitchen layouts including energy star appliances, and the addition of dual pane windows. Common amenity improvements will include a fitness center, clubhouse and theater, indoor pool, outdoor covered and heated lounge with fireplace, a fenced dog park and a sustainable, drought-tolerant landscaping design.

Anthony D. Cinquini, Senior Managing Director and lead banker for Red said, “Everyone involved with the financing did an incredible job to deliver the most efficient financing for Aimco.” As a result of the financing, the borrower secured a very attractive, fixed rate loan which covers both the rehab and the permanent financing phases, is non-recourse and once converted to the permanent phase will fully amortize over 40 years. The community in San Bruno will gain an attractive source of safe, quality and expertly-managed housing ideally located for families and individuals with its close proximity to schools, jobs and the City of San Francisco.

Mr. Cinquini added, “Support for this project from HUD San Francisco and, because of the loan size, HUD in Washington DC, demonstrates their commitment to redevelopment and creating a beneficial asset for the local community.”

Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Aimco is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that engages in the acquisition, ownership, management, and redevelopment of apartment properties. Baltimore Plastic Surgeon Now Offers CoolSculpting

Baltimore Plastic Surgeon Now Offers CoolSculpting®

Columbia, Maryland (PRWEB) January 26, 2012

Dr. Eric Chang of Columbia Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is introducing CoolSculpting, an alternative to liposuction, at his Baltimore area practice. This nonsurgical body contouring procedure helps patients eliminate pockets of fat from various areas around the body.

“There are many options when it comes to surgical body contouring procedures, but I wanted to offer a less-invasive solution for patients who don’t want plastic surgery at my Baltimore practice,” Dr. Chang says.

CoolSculpting uses a controlled cooling process to freeze fat cells without damaging the surrounding skin or tissue.

“During treatment, my patients can sit back and relax, since there is typically no pain involved,” Dr. Chang says. “Following treatment, the skin might appear red or bruised, but this will disappear within a couple of weeks.”

CoolSculpting is often used as a complementary treatment for procedures such as breast augmentation in Baltimore. Combining procedures is a popular way to achieve more dramatic results.

“CoolSculpting can be performed at the same time as another treatment, or shortly after,” Dr. Chang says. “Patients often use the combination of procedures to restore their appearance after pregnancy or a major weight loss.”

CoolSculpting differs from liposuction in that it doesn’t require incisions or anesthesia.

“Although liposuction is an excellent way to lose more substantial pockets of fat, many patients are able to achieve the results they want with CoolSculpting,” Dr. Chang says. “The best way to determine which procedure is right for you is to make an appointment for a consultation and discuss your goals with a qualified plastic surgeon.”

As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Baltimore, Dr. Chang uses his advanced training to create results that complement each patient’s body and lifestyle.

“It is always my goal to create natural looking results for every patient, and to highlight a person’s body contours,” Dr. Chang says.

Dr. Eric Chang (http://www.columbiaaesthetic.com) is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs reconstructive and cosmetic enhancement procedures at his practice, Columbia Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which serves the greater Baltimore area. After earning his medical degree from Columbia University’s prestigious College of Physicians and Surgeons, he went on to complete residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at Stanford University. He has been recognized as a “Top Doc” by Frederick Magazine and holds surgical privileges at multiple hospitals in Maryland.

Rising Star in Advanced Dentistry Dr. Sabrina Magid, DMD, Chosen as One of Westchester Magazine?s Top 22 People to Watch in Westchester County in 2012

Rising Star in Advanced Dentistry Dr. Sabrina Magid, DMD, Chosen as One of Westchester Magazine’s Top 22 People to Watch in Westchester County in 2012

Dr. Sabrina Magid of Advanced Dentistry of Westchester

Harrison, NY (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Dr. Sabrina Magid has been named by Westchester Magazine as one of the top 22 people to watch in the County in 2012. To the generations of patients who have long relied on the stellar care and expertise at Advanced Dentistry of Westchester (ADofW) Dr. Sabrina Magid’s recent award as one of Westchester Magazine’s top movers and shakers to watch in the county should come as no surprise.

“I am very honored to be singled out by Westchester Magazine to receive this award! I believe I received this award for all the dentists that are improving the lives of patients every day. As a practice, Advanced Dentistry of Westchester has incorporated the latest advances in patient care to provide healthy, beautiful smiles, while contributing to our patients’ overall health. Our efforts in the screening and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and other health problems have greatly enhanced the quality of life for many people,” said Dr. Sabrina Magid.

At only 29, Dr. Magid’s expertise in the dental field is extensive. While at The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Magid treated patients in the remote and underserved villages of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Throughout her schooling and dental career, she has been committed to addressing the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing patients. During high school, she took American Sign Language courses at the New York School for the Deaf, and at Duke University, she initiated and taught an introductory class on ASL and Deaf culture. She has acted as a mentor to other dentists, young and old, in sharing the need for sensitivity in their approach to treating deaf patients.

Dr. Magid is quite accomplished as a young woman in the field. She is the recipient of the prestigious “Robert Seminara Resident of the Year” award for “excellence in General Dentistry and outstanding service as a PGY1 Dental Resident” from NY Presbyterian-Methodist Hospital. She is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, the American Dental Association, and a founding member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. Dr. Magid has lectured to dental societies around the state on the dentist’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). “Dentists are in a unique position to screen for and treat this widespread problem,” said Magid.

Dr. Magid is focused on the future of dentistry and the “whole body” dentist approach. “We were one of the first practices in the country to use digital X-ray, which is more diagnostic than film with far less radiation. Today, along with digital X-ray, we use a tiny laser and camera to diagnose dental decay long before it is seen by other means–allowing us to treat conservatively.” ADofW was also the first practice to use the VELscope device to prevent oral cancer which was featured on Dr. Oz and NBC’s “The Doctors.” Along with offering laser treatment and “air abrasion” as minimally invasive technique for fillings, Dr. Magid, and her partner in the practice Dr. Kenneth Magid, employ a CAD CAM laser/software system for more complex work involving crowns and bonding. ADW plans to expand the use of this state-of-the-art technology for immediately replacing teeth considered unrestorable. For more information on Dr. Sabrina Magid, please visit http://www.adofw.com/

All-New Doctor.com Unites Powerful Doctor Search with Unique Social Media Features

All-New Doctor.com Unites Powerful Doctor Search with Unique Social Media Features

Doctor.com

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 28, 2008

The all-new http://www.doctor.com , launching today, is a remarkably easy-to-use physician directory that lets consumers quickly find a doctor or other health professional based on geographic location, medical specialty and even health insurance affiliation. With a beta version of the site quietly launched in August, Doctor.com has already been attracting attention for its powerful tools, ease of use, and innovative social elements. In addition to doctor search, visitors use the site to research provider qualifications, share doctor reviews, and download office paperwork in advance of their appointment. Doctor.com’s proprietary database includes detailed profiles for more than a million physicians, dentists, nurses, chiropractors, therapists, alternative medicine practitioners and other health professionals. In addition to listing providers’ contact information and health insurance affiliations, the site also gives consumers such valuable information as gender, spoken language(s), office hours, and credentials like medical education, board certifications, and professional training.

“No other consumer Web site offers our combination of powerful search features and detailed provider information,” claims Andrei Zimiles, general manager of Doctor.com. “We invested heavily to ensure that the site would truly make people’s lives easier. For example, we show users which insurance plans doctors accept. Surprisingly, while the majority of users searching online are insured, most of today’s largest medical sites don’t include this information in their doctor listings.”

The “hard” data on Doctor.com is augmented by unique social media features that enable consumers to review and rate healthcare providers they know. “Nearly every medical professional licensed to practice in the United States has a Doctor.com profile – that means our visitors have a lot of options,” added Zimiles. “By empowering users to share their experiences and recommend exceptional doctors to the rest of the community, we help people narrow their search to the providers best aligned with their needs. This is the critical human element that is missing from typical doctor directories.”

Marketing Resources for Medical Professionals:

In addition to its consumer-facing features, Doctor.com also offers health professionals attractive marketing opportunities that generate targeted local Web traffic and can help to grow a medical practice.

“Professionals can claim their free Doctor.com profile to add or edit basic information and keep it up to date,” added Zimiles. “We also offer powerful marketing options to increase the provider’s prominence in search results and their overall exposure across the Web, particularly in major search engines like Google and Yahoo!. With an upgraded profile, professional users can also add supplemental content such as photos and videos that showcase their practice and forms for patients to download.”

Feedback from early adopters who have upgraded their professional profiles has been unanimously positive. Dr. Fara Nosratian, a California-based general and cosmetic dentist, was one of the first doctors to upgrade her profile. “I’m very pleased with my upgraded Doctor.com profile,” says Dr. Nosratian. “I really like the idea of being able to give patients a sense of what to expect during their first visit. The feature that lets me upload my standard new patient forms to the site is also excellent. When I get patients to arrive with all their paperwork already filled out, it really cuts down waiting room time.”

Supplemental Information for Web/Technical Editors:

Web Technologies Enhance User Experience

Doctor.com features an AJAX-driven mashup of Google Maps, GeoIP targeting and proprietary data to help people find local doctors who accept their health insurance in the fastest and easiest way possible. Search results are displayed on an expandable map as well as in traditional list format.

Queries to Doctor.com’s database of more than 1.2 million provider profiles are executed with remarkable speed thanks to a combination of database optimizations, caching, and Akamai-powered content delivery.

To insure continual record accuracy, programmers at Doctor.com created a unique data-parsing algorithm that applies more than 100 rules to scrub and normalize multiple sources of provider and health insurance data. Refreshed monthly, the Doctor.com database is believe to be the most comprehensive – and accurate – doctor directory on the Web today.

About Doctor.com:

Doctor.com is a next-generation website dedicated to helping people find local medical professionals who accept their health insurance. With more than a million providers listed, Doctor.com has a profile for nearly every individual licensed to practice medicine in the United States. The site combines dynamic maps with detailed provider data and user recommendations to take the guess work out of finding the right doctor online.

http://www.doctor.com/signup.php For health professionals, Doctor.com represents a compelling opportunity to increase online visibility, attract new business, and strengthen bonds with existing patients. Professional users can claim their profile for free, or upgrade to a premium package that includes increased prominence in search results and additional features that streamline interactions with both new and existing patients.

Global NGO Project HOPE Says Health Education Is Crucial for Indonesia’s Women Seven Years After Deadly Tsunami

HOPE’s Health Education Programs Are Empowering Indonesia’s Health Workers

Millwood, VA (PRWEB) December 23, 2011

Maternal and Child Health Programs Empowering Communities for Better Health

Global NGO Project HOPE says health education has been the driving force in rebuilding healthy and stable lives for women and children in post-tsunami Indonesia, and in helping to reconstruct a shattered health care system, as the country remembers the disaster that washed over the region seven years ago on December 26.

A staggering 226,000 people were killed when a tsunami, triggered by a 9.15-magnitude earthquake, struck Indonesia’s Aceh Province on Sumatra Island on December 26, 2004. It was seen as one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history as over 1.7 million people were displaced in the worst affected countries – Indonesia, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

“The region’s health care system was already in disrepair after 30 years of civil war which made it difficult for many to access nation-wide health initiatives. The tsunami compounded the problem, exposing women and children to a crisis in health care,” said Dr. Nasaruddin Sheldon, Project HOPE’s Country Director in Indonesia.

Project HOPE, a global health education and humanitarian assistance organization, responded to the humanitarian crisis by sending more than 200 medical volunteers aboard the United States Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy, as well as donating more than $ 7 million in medical supplies and medicines.

Again in 2006, when an earthquake hit Indonesia’s Central Java region, HOPE responded with a Mobile Health Caravan that traveled to remote areas to provide pediatric care, psychotherapy, physical therapy, health worker training, and data collection and surveillance.

In Aceh Province, one of the most underserved areas of Indonesia due to its geographic inaccessibility and the impact of the 2004 tsunami, HOPE programs have improved the health of women and children in two sub-districts by expanding access to quality maternal and child health services through the promotion of healthy behaviors.

The Big Lottery Fund, a grant-making public body in the United Kingdom awarded Project HOPE a grant in 2007 to implement a maternal and child health project in Aceh Barat. The project, which ends in February, was implemented in 68 villages, addressing the health needs of over 8,500 women of reproductive age and 3,622 children under the age of five.

“HOPE’s health education efforts in Aceh Barat have strengthened morale in this community after the tsunami destroyed many lives. People truly value their health now more than ever. This project has strengthened health providers’ knowledge and skills in promoting and supporting improved immunization systems, and improving the quality of maternal health services while building the capacity of village health committees, health posts and other community-based organizations and individuals, including village midwives, health attendants and community health workers,” said Dr. Sheldon.

In Nagan Raya, HOPE’s Child-to-Child program, also sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund, has trained elementary school teachers on common infant, child and maternal health problems and desired health behaviors. The teachers in turn teach their fifth-grade students the same health lessons, which are then shared with siblings and other family members at home to improve health knowledge. The importance of early and exclusive breastfeeding, management of diarrhea, malaria treatment, growth monitoring and nutrition, acute respiratory infection, immunization and personal hygiene are among the topics covered at school.

Almost 90 percent of 143 elementary schoolsl in Nagan Raya implemented the program, reaching more than 2,600 fifth-grade students. This health education model was expanded to all elementary schools in Nagan Raya as decreed by the District Education Office.

Midwife training has had much success in teaching midwives how to handle problems in newborns including low-birth weight, respiratory infections and early signs of infection. HOPE trainers also educate midwives about exclusive breastfeeding and the necessity of delivering with a skilled birth attendant.

Project HOPE successfully trained over 100 midwives and 72 traditional birth attendants, vastly improving the chances of a healthy birth and the overall health of the mother and child.

“The value of the behavior changes in communities that received health education is immeasurable – women felt empowered and therefore children are impacted in positive ways as well,” said Dr. Sheldon.
